BinitaBarai.JPG

Binita Barai

Indiana

Binita comes to South Asians for Biden with a very diverse collection of experiences. She is a daughter of Indian immigrants, was born in Chicago, and grew up in Northwest Indiana in an extremely politically passionate family, so the seeds for activism were planted within her from childhood - it was just a matter of time before she reached the right place in her life to dive in. Attending the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. in 2017, joining Post March Salon, and being elected to serve as a district delegate to the 2020 Democratic National Convention have been transformative experiences which keep her committed to deeper engagement in our democracy.

While attending the University of Pennsylvania for undergraduate studies, Binita studied South Asia Studies and Systems Engineering, and she also continued her intense study and performance of Indian dance, as well as began her journey into the study and performance of West African and Afro-Cuban dance. Upon graduating from UPenn, she moved to New York City to manage technical projects as a Logan Scholar with Time, Inc. Corporate life left little time for her artistic passions, so Binita moved to Mumbai, India to be able to fully focus her attention on Indian classical dance, simultaneously embarking on a three-year journey of exploring film production in Bollywood as well as gaining a new perspective on her family’s homeland, consequently finding herself creatively, professionally and personally.

Wanting to merge her creative and technical inclinations, Binita returned to the States to earn her certificate in Interior Architecture at UCLA, which she achieved with honors, and continued on to pursue her master’s in the same. While studying in Los Angeles, she had the honor of training under design greats Martyn Lawrence Bullard (Martyn Lawrence Bullard Design, Live, Love & Decorate, Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Decorators) and Bridgid Coulter (Bridgid Coulter Design, Home Made Simple, Actress, Activist, and Founder of Blackbird House). As she transitioned back to her hometown of Chicago, Binita felt privileged to serve as an Interior Designer under Alessandra Branca (Branca, Inc., New Classic Interiors), as well as Showroom Director and Design Project Manager for Julia Buckingham Edelmann (Buckingham Interiors + Design, Modernique).

She then began her journey as an entrepreneur, founding her own full service interior design studio, MangoMist Designs, LLC, where she currently serves as Principal Designer. The studio focuses on interior design for high end residential and select healthcare design projects. It has also been Binita’s pleasure to contribute her design expertise to Chartwell Design Group (co-founded by Tom Stringer (Tom Stringer Design Partners, Tom Stringer: A Global View) and Chris Harris) as a design consultant, as needed, while continuing to serve her MangoMist Designs clients full-time.

In addition to her design career and being a mother, one of Binita’s greatest honors has been to serve as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) in Chicago, sworn in by the court to help advocate for the best interests of children in the foster care system.

Dividing her time between Northwest Indiana and Chicago, Binita never encounters a dull moment in her family life with her husband, their two young sons, and their family dog, Sheru. She is an avid reader, remains committed to dear causes, including social justice, gender equity, and animal rights, and is thrilled that she has the opportunity to help get the first woman of color elected into the office of the Vice President of the United States of America, sending a mandate to girls and women the world over to dream big, fight hard, and persist!
